Did you know? Starting December 2022, products in the EU region containing MIBK solvent will require labeling for the presence of a Category 2 carcinogen. This reclassification impacts formulations, including automotive refinish coatings containing ≥ 1% concentration—requiring relabeling to have the long-term health hazard pictogram.

Why make the switch in refinish? While there is a burden for formulators to relabel, collision repair shops could also face challenges, including new risk assessments, installing additional protective measures, and safety training. Not changing from MIBK could cause body shops to switch paint systems.

Where to start? Ready to make the switch from MIBK? There is no drop-in replacement—so the time to act is now. Eastman can help you find the right alternative materials for refinish coating formulations using a few key steps. These include:

  • Evaluation of replacement solvent options
  • Formulation testing
  • Reliable supply after qualification

How can Eastman help? You don’t have to travel this road alone. Eastman is here to help you stay compliant without compromising the quality your customers expect.
