Enhance the bond

Applying paint to polypropylene and thermoplastic polyolefin (TPO) is challenging because most coatings have poor adhesion to plastics. We offer a solution with our widely used chlorinated polyolefins (CPOs), which act as adhesion promoters for coatings and inks on polyolefin plastics like untreated polyethylene, polypropylene or TPO. Our chlorinated polyolefins serve as adhesion promoters in at least three ways:

As a primer between the substrate and subsequent coatings
As a primer or tie coat between coating layers
As an additive to the paint or ink

Waterborne CPO adhesion promoters

Eastman CPO dispersions let users apply an adhesion-promoting primer from a waterborne system or promote adhesion of a waterborne coating through use as an additive. These dispersions serve as valuable base resins in adhesion-promoting primers and additives in waterborne coating formulations, effectively improving longevity and adhesion to polypropylene-based substrates.

Nonchlorinated adhesion promoters

Eastman’s nonchlorinated adhesion promoters deliver excellent adhesion to TPO and polypropylene substrates. Formulators can select a waterborne adhesion promoter that is free of chlorine and alkylphenol ethoxylate (AEPO). It can be used as a blend-in additive for waterborne primers and base coats. This enables the development of volatile organic compound (VOC) compliant coatings for adhesion to modified polypropylene substrates.
