Protein trays

Traditional polystyrene foam trays routinely used for protein packaging are facing regulatory and consumer scrutiny. Therefore Eastman has developed a sustainable alternative.

Many retailers are seeking to ensure their protein packaging is 100% reusable, recyclable or compostable but are unable to meet this goal with current options. Lightweight trays made from Aventa perform well while helping retailers meet their packaging sustainability goals. That's because Aventa is certified as compostable.

Tip-top trays

Aventa is made from sustainably sourced wood pulp, and for protein trays, is designed to be a drop-in replacement to work on existing overwrap food packaging equipment. When the consumer is ready to dispose of the tray, they have the option to either home compost or send it to their local commercial compost facility.

Trays made from Aventa work as well as traditional polystyrene. They are durable, resulting in a low packaging failure rate, and do not become brittle, which gives them good freezer performance. In addition, trays made from Aventa:

  • Maintain freshness with no adverse impact on shelf life
  • Meet consumer appearance expectations with no sales shrink
  • Offer sustainability benefits to the manufacturer, including certified and industrial compostability
  • Have a lower carbon footprint than most alternatives because the use less raw material
  • Will not remain as microplastics in the environment
  • Are made from renewable sources, not derived from petroleum products

Disposing of Aventa

Aventa performs like polystyrene foam, but it degrades like uncoated paper.
