Wood furniture applications

Solus can offer furniture lacquer suppliers and furniture manufacturers better productivity and clear, uniform films. Solus can enable fast hardness development, which allows early stacking and processing, and products can be packaged sooner without fear of blocking. Other advantages include:

  • Nonyellowing under influence of UV light
  • Excellent flow and leveling characteristics for defect reduction and improved coating appearance
  • The correct balance of viscosity and solids content to allow excellent wetting, penetration and pore definition on open-pore wood species
  • Superior control of silica matting aids for consistent gloss levels at a variety of film thicknesses
  • Reduced variation of film thickness due to “picture framing”
  • Improved atomization
  • User-friendly application characteristics
  • Improved adhesion (UV systems)
  • Resistance to plasticizer migration

A safer alternative

Nitrocellulose is common in wood coatings, but known and emerging safety and longevity concerns are leading formulators to seek alternatives. Solus is a viable alternative to nitrocellulose and is nonyellowing, has superior cold check resistance and lower flammability.

Improved appearance

Solus works in numerous ways to improve the appearance of wood. It helps create an effective barrier as a carrier base coat or primer. It can eliminate common surface defects, resist UV light and salt, and prevent yellowing.

Solus-based acrylic lacquers enable manufacturers to reflow with a solvent or gentle heat, making it easier to remove lint, scratches or fingerprints. This ensures that wood products look beautiful on the showroom floor and well into the future.

Processing improvements

Solus can improve your processing operations:

  • High Tg reduces dry-to-touch handling times, resulting in faster production rates.
  • It can be added to acid-catalyzed wood coatings to improve flow for lacquer-like drying.
  • It is nonflammable and therefore safer to use in manufacturing. It can also be stored more safely than nitrocellulose.
  • It allows for production of products that comply with nitrocellulose restrictions.
  • It is alcohol soluble, making it compatible with higher-alcohol formulations used in acid cure.
  • It enhances rheology to better enable sprayability.

Formulation flexibility

Solus can be used as an additive, modifier or co-resin. When used as a co-resin, it provides a high-gloss surface due to its resin-like qualities.  It can be cross-linked, particularly with isocyanates and amino resins, and it’s usable in coatings requiring some water solubility. Solus improves pigment wetting and dispersion characteristics.
